Algae in reef tanks isn’t always a sign of “dirty” water—sometimes it’s the result of imbalanced nutrients, light spectrum, flow patterns, or new tank cycling. The key is distinguishing the type of algae (or algae-like organisms) because the best treatment depends on what you’re actually dealing with.

This guide covers common reef-tank algae and algae-like blooms, how to tell them apart, and what to do to bring the tank back into balance.

1) Diatoms (brown, dusty film)

What it looks like: Light-to-dark brown coating that can look like a “dust” on sand, rock, and glass. It often wipes off easily, then returns quickly.

Common causes: Typically linked to silicates and early-tank maturation, though silicate may also enter through source water, salt mix, or sand.

Best approach: Remove film mechanically (wiping/siphoning), then reduce the inputs. Consider checking for silicates, improving filtration with quality DI (deionization) or silicate-specific media, and keeping nutrient levels stable rather than swinging.

2) Hair algae (green strands, “tufts”)

What it looks like: Longer, stringy or tuft-like green growth that can shed and tangle. It’s usually more “visible structure” than films.

Common causes: Often associated with elevated dissolved nutrients (especially when paired with available light) and/or insufficient export from the system.

Best approach: Manual removal works, but the root driver must be addressed. Increase consistent export (skimming efficiency, healthier herbivory, and controlled feeding), stabilize measurable parameters (nitrate/phosphate), and improve flow to prevent dead zones where algae takes hold.

3) Cyanobacteria (often mistaken for algae)

What it looks like: Slime-like or mats that can range from red to dark brown/blue-green. It may smell “earthy” when disturbed and can spread over rock, sand, and low-flow areas.

Common causes: Frequently tied to nutrient imbalance and localized flow/oxygen reduction. Some tanks see blooms after changes that temporarily disrupt bacterial populations.

Best approach: Combine targeted removal with improved tank conditions. Siphon or turkey-baste to break up mats, reduce trapped detritus, and improve circulation. Many reef keepers also evaluate nutrient targets (for example, ensuring phosphate and nitrate aren’t both near zero at the same time), since cyanobacteria often thrives in unstable conditions.

4) Dinoflagellates (dinoflagellate blooms)

What it looks like: Thick snotty films or patches that can be brown, reddish-brown, or tan. In some cases, the growth forms “slick” areas and can appear to move or smear easily.

Common causes: Often related to light, nutrient availability, and tank maturation. Some strains are associated with certain detritus patterns and stable-but-wrong nutrient states.

Best approach: Address the tank’s conditions rather than relying on quick fixes. Many keepers use a combination of improved nutrient export, reducing excess dissolved organics, and managing light exposure. If you suspect dinoflagellates, it’s wise to move step-by-step, because some treatments can stress sensitive reef organisms.

5) Green film algae (short turf or smear)

What it looks like: A green coating that builds on rock and glass, typically easier to scrape than hair algae but more stubborn than diatoms.

Common causes: Usually tied to available nutrients plus adequate light, often amplified by overfeeding, weak export, or excess dissolved organics.

Best approach: Increase regular maintenance and export: keep the water column clean of particulates, calibrate lighting schedules, and ensure biological filtration is functioning well. Scraping and water changes can help, but long-term improvement depends on aligning nutrient inputs/outputs.

A simple “identify first, then treat” workflow

When algae appears, try to observe it for a couple of days and match it to visual traits:

  • Dusty brown film → often diatoms; check silicates and source water.
  • Stringy/tufted hair → often hair algae; focus on nutrient balance and flow.
  • Slime mats, low-flow areas → often cyanobacteria; siphon plus circulation and detritus control.
  • Snotty, patchy, smears easily → consider dinoflagellates; manage tank conditions carefully.
  • Green film on glass/rock → turf/film algae; improve export and feeding/light routines.

After you identify the likely type, change one variable at a time (for example, flow or export), and monitor both coral and algae response. Rapid, aggressive interventions can cause setbacks, especially in established reef systems.

Safety note: “Algae treatments” sold for aquariums vary widely. Some products can affect corals, invertebrates, or your biological filtration. If you’re considering chemical treatments, confirm the exact organism you’re targeting, follow dosing precisely, and consider consulting an experienced local reef professional or retailer.
